LA Honors Book Responses and Assignments

 

All LA Honor students were asked to read two books, one fiction, one non-fiction for summer reading. You will take AR tests on both books. Also, please complete a journal for each book, fully elaborated, typed, with a minimum of 350 words each. 

Fiction Assignment - Journal
Write four journal entries for your book. Include characters, plot, setting and theme.  Each of these elements should be a fully elaborated paragraph with a minimum of 350 words total.

Non-Fiction Assignment - Journal
Write four entries with information from your book. Include information about the purpose, argument, and a personal reflection on this topic. Elaborate on your opinion of the book.

Reading Assignments for Language Arts - 2013-2014

 

You are required to read three AR books per marking period and take AR Tests on all of them. The Books must be near your level of reading.  The AR Test will be a grade that you earn for LA. Three books, 100 points each = 300 points for your LA Grade per marking period so it is very important that you read for 30 minutes each night and keep taking AR tests. 

 

Summer Reading - Book Project, due Friday Sept 13, 2013

Read a book, make a book project and take an AR Test on the book. 

Book Projects
Choose one project from the list below

*Journal Entry: Create five (5) entries that focus on the plot, setting, characters, or theme. After each entry include your personal reflection. Each journal entry must be at least eight sentences. Include the title and author as your heading on the first page.  Journal entries may either be typed or written neatly.

*Illustration

Draw a picture of the main character of your book.  Label the picture with 8-10 captions that relate the character to the plot, settling, and/or theme of the novel.

*Letter to a character

Write a letter giving advice to one of the characters in the novel.  (one page minimum)

*Scrapbook

Make a scrapbook (pictures and captions) relating to the character, plot, setting, and/or theme in the book.  (6 page minimum, which includes title, and author page)

*PowerPoint Presentation

Make a presentation (minimum 8 slides) about the characters, plot, setting, and/or theme of your book.

You Can't Write a Poem About McDonald's

Noon. Hunger is the only thing
singing in my belly.
I walk through the blossoming cherry trees
on the library mall,
past the young couples coupling,
by the crazy fanatic
screaming doom and salvation
at a sensation-hungry crowd,
to the Lake Street McDonald’s.
It is crowded, the lines long and sluggish.
I wait in the greasy air.
All around me people are eating –
the sizzle of conversation,
the salty odor of sweat,
the warm flesh pressing out of
hip huggers and halter tops.
When I finally reach the cash register,
the counter girl is crisp as a pickle,
her fingers thin as French fries,
her face brown as a bun.
Suddenly I understand cannibalism.
As I reach for her,
she breaks into pieces
wrapped neat and packaged for take-out.
I’m thinking, how amazing it is
to live in this country, how easy
it is to be filled.
We leave together, her warm aroma
close at my side.
I walk back through the cherry trees
blossoming up into pies,
the young couple frying in
the hot, oily sun,
the crowd eating up the fanatic,
singing, my ear, my eye, my tongue
fat with the wonder
of this hungry world.

HOMEWORK - LA Students must read 3 AR books per grading period and take 3 AR tests which count toward your grade. 100 point each=300 points per grading period. Your score on the AR test is your grade. First AR test is  Sept 17th when we go to the Library. 

• LA Homework: Read your choice of AR book on your level for at least 30 minutes each night. Finish Warm-ups. Quiz on Vocabulary on Friday.
• SS Homework: Read and watch the news. Read about American History.
